OpenAI's Longtime COO Is Leaving, Right Before Its IPO

“I’m sad to share that I’ll be leaving OpenAI to start something new.” On August 11, OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap sent an internal message that closed out more than seven years at the company. He didn’t say what’s next — only that he’d “been thinking about the next horizon” and promised “more to share soon.”
A veteran who went from CFO to COO
Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 and spent four years as CFO before taking over as COO in 2022, only moving into a special-projects role earlier this year. In other words, he’s been there for essentially the entire arc from research lab to the company OpenAI is today. In his note, he looked back: “I’ve had the privilege of building the initial versions of most of our operating and business teams, from finance to legal, people, and corporate security.” He also stressed that he believes “more in OpenAI than ever,” and that leaving is about helping advance the mission “from a different vantage point.”
The timing: right in the middle of IPO prep
The departure lands while OpenAI is preparing for a major IPO, and it’s part of a broader run of executive changes at the company recently. Whether a seven-plus-year executive who helped stand up nearly every core function leaving to “start something new” right now will shape outside perceptions of IPO timing or internal stability is impossible to say yet — neither Lightcap nor OpenAI has said more.
What Lightcap’s “something new” actually is remains a total blank for now. But given seven years spanning finance, legal, people, and corporate security, whatever he does next is unlikely to be a first-time rookie move.
