Two Months Behind ChatGPT, Gemini Hits 1 Billion Users

ChatGPT crossed the 1-billion-monthly-active-user mark this past June. Two months later, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced on X that the Gemini app just did the same. It’s the 14th Google product to ever reach that scale — and over the past year, Gemini’s daily active users have tripled.

What the numbers actually say

Google’s Q2 2026 earnings report already put Gemini at more than 950 million monthly active users; it has now officially crossed the billion mark. On usage patterns: 63% of Gemini users talk to the assistant directly using voice, the app generates more than 150 million images a day, and it has over 100 million active users on iOS alone. Gemini is now woven into Search, Workspace, Android, and its own standalone app — meaning plenty of people are probably using it daily without realizing that’s what it is.

The technical side: Gemini 3.5 Flash leans into coding and agents

Alongside the user-count milestone, Google also shipped Gemini 3.5 Flash, a model update focused on improving coding performance and autonomous agent task handling. Google says more Gemini features tied to its Pixel hardware are coming at its next Made by Google event.

ChatGPT vs. Gemini: a close race to a billion

Lined up on a timeline, this race has been tight: OpenAI’s ChatGPT crossed 1 billion monthly active users first, in June 2026, with Gemini catching up just two months later in August. Both companies are now operating at the same order of magnitude, and the next phase of competition is less likely to be about who crosses a billion first, and more about finer-grained usage metrics — voice interaction share, agent task completion rates, and the like.

Whether Gemini can keep up this growth rate, or whether ChatGPT’s head start ends up widening the gap again, is still an open question. But for this moment, at least, both companies have cleared the bar that “an AI assistant isn’t truly mainstream until it hits a billion users.”
